Q WHAT IS SHELLLANG KOREA?

We are a company that develops and sells various goods inlaid with the colorful mother-of-pearl, such as mother-of-pearl stickers, so that you can enjoy them in your daily lives.

Q HOW DID YOU MAKE THIS WIRELESS CHARGER, DALBAN?

We wanted to use our designs and technologies not only for crafting but also from an industrial perspective. Hence, we combined mold technology, the heart of designing, with traditional Korean designs and came up with the idea to combine a small dining table, where Korean people eat their precious daily meals, with a smartphone charging stand, one of the core parts of modern everyday life. K-culture’s strength made it the perfect time to fascinate the world with our product, and we knew it was the moment for us to create a Korean wireless charging stand that can be used anywhere, like Korea-themed hotels and cafés.

Q WHY ARE THERE TWO DESIGNS OF DALBAN?

Each design is shaped like the typical furniture symbol or small table inlaid with the mother-of-pearl so that you can enjoy Shelllang Korea’s mother-of-pearl sticker designs. We gave dalban the authenticity of our mother-of-pearl designs and infused it with the blessed meaning, making it more suitable to give as a gift. The handcrafted mother-of-pearl design with a pair of cranes and peaches signify good health, long life, and the amicable relationship between husband and wife. The design is created harmoniously: the lotus leaf’s vein from the small dining table with the inlaid lotus leaf–shaped mother-of-pearl design symbolizes birth and resurrection, and the turtle and fish pairs manifest longevity and wealth.

Q WHICH PART OF THE PROCESS DID YOU PUT THE MOST EFFORT INTO?

The hardest parts were realizing the beautiful lines of Korean traditions within the limits of molding and calculating each measurement to ensure the wireless charging stand functioned correctly. What we repeatedly modified during the process was making the table’s feet like the toe of a padded sock and optimizing the charging capability.

Q WHICH ADVICE FROM THE JUDGES DURING THE CONTEST LEFT THE STRONGEST IMPRESSION ON YOU?

They said that the idea was very original, and the shape was fascinating. Their advice that it would be wise to make a program for people to experience the assembling process inspired me to consider applying it differently. As a result, we planned an experience program that allows people to assemble small tables and attach the mother-of-pearl stickers onto them however they want. We only have black tables now but plan to make a milky white one to match the modern aesthetic.

Q ANY FUTURE PLANS?

We plan to expand our distribution network so that our products can be suitable presents for hanok hotels and cafés and be used as academic souvenirs or given to foreigners.
