Q TELL US ABOUT THE SLOW SLOW DAM DAM.

My brand is one for ceramics inspired by and embodying Gangwon-do’s nature. I explore the beauty that can be used and the aesthetics and functionality of ceramics. I try to convey the momentary happiness that I experience in Gangwon-do, such as the greetings I receive from the mountains and the comfort I enjoy from the sea, through the products.

Q HOW DO YOU PRODUCE THE POTATO CUPS?

I use the “slip casting” method. With the round shapes that I make with my hands, I make the plaster mold and pour clay water inside it to make potato cups of uniform sizes. While in the plaster mold, I trim the deformed objects, the potato curves, and the parts the lips touch for smooth drinking. The completed potato cups are then dried, given the first coat, and recoated to make them firm and glossy.

Q HOW DID THE CONTEST HELP YOUR BRAND?

I got to go through and think about the future direction of the brand and how to efficiently produce the products during the Q&A session that I held for the final screening. I also realized that the products have to be upgraded to fit the purpose of a souvenir and that I need to build a systemic production system. I currently produce multiple types of cups in small amounts alone, but I plan to supplement this with a bigger workforce and additional production methods.

Q WHAT WAS THE MOST DIFFICULT PART OF PRODUCING THE PRODUCTS?

Given the nature of the production process, I must deal with unpredictable variables like the weather. Fortunately, I had built data while firing thousands of ceramics even before the contest. So, there, I could safely showcase cute potato cups full of character.

Q WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PLANS?

I work hard alone in a small studio, but there were moments I wondered if the products I make are beautiful only to me. However, I gained confidence in my work through the contest. I would like to make popular and great potato cups from Gangwon-do that are simply delightful.
