1. Tell us about Hwansuldang.
Hwansuldang is one of the resident companies at Seoul Woman Craft Center, the Arium. We sell products that reinterpret traditional culture using modern technology, designing them through 3D printing and various crafts.
2. What inspired you to create artwork using royal seals?
What animal comes to mind when you think of Korea’s royal seals? When I first asked this question, most people were confused by a variety of answers, including haetae, dragons, lions, and turtles. Our product aims to inform that the Korean royal seal was adorned with dragon motifs.
3. What did you focus on most when creating your artwork?
We wanted to make it approachable and memorable for everyone, so we added a variety of colors to create different versions of the Jegojibo. We think that the most prominent feature is the detail of the dragon decoration. Despite its small size, every single scale is represented, and the side view of the seal reveals more of its characteristics when illuminated.
4. Were there any challenges in your production or distribution?
What we haven’t solved yet is the manufacturing part. We’ve been getting a lot of interest, and we’re sorry that we haven’t been able to keep up with the demand. Since every piece is handmade, we constantly face fighting battles with quantities. We are exploring various methods for improvement.
5. What did you learn from the contest, and do you have any stories you’d like to share?
We are sincerely grateful that the “Royal Seal: Jegojibo Magnet” was recognized and opened up possibilities. We will continue to unearth the beautiful stories embedded in our traditions and present them in the colors of Hwansuldang. The contest taught us that there are broader ways to expand.
6. Tell us about your plans for the future.
We’re experimenting with various product transformations. As we introduce new colors, we’re also envisioning special packages that allow you to add a small tassel or personalize it with your own stamp.
