1. Please introduce ‘Ji-eum Studio.’
Jieum Studio is a brand that combines the depth of traditional lacquer craftsmanship with modern design to create unique handmade products. Based on the kyochil technique, we develop a variety of items, including bowls, plates, soju cups, and rice wine cups, helping people experience the traditional beauty in everyday life. We use eco-friendly materials and sustainable production methods to create environmentally conscious products, aiming to share the beauty of Korea with the world.
2. What inspired the development of ‘Breath of Nature’?
The ‘Breath of Nature’ series began with the intention of expressing the simplicity and warmth of nature through traditional lacquer techniques. We recreated stone patterns and colors inspired by nature using the kyochil technique, designing the pieces to seamlessly integrate lacquer craftsmanship into modern life. Our goal was to capture the beauty of nature and the depth of lacquer in the products, providing a special experience where tradition and modernity harmonize.
3. What aspect did you focus on the most when developing the product?
The key focus was on how to harmoniously incorporate lacquer into modern design. Through multiple layers of lacquer and polishing, we aimed to achieve rich colors and natural stone patterns, ensuring that each product possesses its own unique character. At the same time, we paid careful attention to maintaining practicality, and shape and usability to preserve the artistic value as a work of art.
4. Surely, the process was not easy. What challenges did you encounter?
Lacquer work requires very delicate skills, and a single mistake can damage the entire product. Particularly, achieving the desired color and texture during the process of applying and polishing multiple layers of lacquer is intricate and time-consuming. There were many challenges in meticulously expressing colors and patterns inspired by nature on the products, but through various efforts, we were able to create high-quality items.
5. What was the most memorable moment in this contest?
The most memorable moment was the nervousness I felt during the third round of in-person evaluations and interviews. Explaining the creative ideas and passion I had poured into my work directly to the judges made me feel a renewed sense of affection and pride for my work. Hearing one of the judges say, “it’s so beautiful,” was especially rewarding, as it felt like our efforts were recognized. I believe the nervousness and joy I experienced during that moment will stay with me for a long time.
