What kind of company is “Visual Storyteller”?
Visual Storyteller is a brand that creates the “Visual Storytelling History Series on One Page.” Since its establishment in 2018, it has reinterpreted history through visuals under the motto “Let’s make everything viewable on a single page!” Its first work, “The Visualstorytelling for The Joseon Dynasty” (2019), achieved 2,813% funding on Wadiz, drawing significant public attention. The series has since expanded to include “Korean Modern History,” “Seoul Treasure Map,” “History of Automobiles,” “History of Whisky,” “History of Tennis,” and “History of Coffee.” Building on this content, the creator also writes and illustrates books such as “Yi Sun-sin Brought to Life in Visuals” and “Treasures of Seoul,” continuing to work as an artist who “conveys history through drawings.”
How was “The Visualstorytelling for The Joseon Dynasty” created?
It all began with a simple idea: to make vast historical records easier to understand. I believed that if complex information were organized visually rather than through text, anyone could grasp it at a glance. Since childhood, I’ve enjoyed summarizing large amounts of information on a single page, and I thought that expressing history this way could offer both intellectual and aesthetic enjoyment to viewers. The Joseon Dynasty, in particular, is a subject familiar to all Koreans, yet one that can spark new interest when seen through illustrations.
What did you focus on most when creating the product?
The main focus was balancing the accuracy of information with the clarity of design. It wasn’t just about summarizing text; the visual flow within the single page needed to create a “path of information.” I wanted viewers to understand it easily while also feeling that it was something they’d like to own, so I considered both aesthetics and structural completeness. Through numerous layout tests, I carefully adjusted the text size, spacing between illustrations, and color contrast.
What was the most challenging part of the production process?
The most difficult part was studying historical facts in depth and translating them into visual language. Each new topic required reviewing vast amounts of historical material, and turning that information into illustrations demanded considerable time and effort. In an age when content is consumed quickly, I sometimes felt impatient, but I believe that taking the time to refine each work is the very essence and philosophy of this brand.
What aspects changed from your initial concept when turning The Joseon Dynasty into a product, and what improvements did you identify through the contest?
At first, I envisioned it as a simple timeline-style poster, but I gradually enhanced its visual completeness and storytelling elements. Based on feedback received during the contest evaluation, I began exploring ways to expand the work into various sizes and editions and recognized the need to produce a premium gift edition. Having gone through nearly ten years of revisions and development to reach its current form, I plan to continue refining and evolving it over time.
What are your future plans?
Staying true to our founding vision, we plan to continue the “Visual Storytelling History Series on One Page.” Beyond the Joseon Dynasty, we aim to expand our content to include subjects such as modern Korean history, world history, and cultural history. Even in an age of rapidly consumed content, our goal is to create works that people want to keep and revisit. Through a visual language that allows history to be understood at a glance, we hope to grow into a brand that bridges education, art, and design.
