Please introduce “UNEEDIT Co., Ltd.”
UNEEDIT Co., Ltd., founded in 2016, develops traditional-culture designs under the philosophy of “bringing the beauty of Korean tradition into everyday life around the world.” The brand presents modern reinterpretations of traditional aesthetics at official retail locations such as Seoul Station, Gyeongbokgung Palace, and Incheon International Airport. “UNEEDIT” combines “Unique” and “Edit,” reflecting the brand’s spirit of “editing tradition anew.”
What inspired you to create “Traditional Knot Tassel Hair Scrunchie”?
While reflecting on the idea of “tradition naturally blending into everyday life,” I was inspired by the sight of tourists in hanbok strolling through palace grounds. The flowing silk daenggi (traditional hair ribbon) and colorful knots in their hair looked so beautiful that I wanted people today to experience that same aesthetic in their daily lives. That’s how the “Traditional Knot Tassel Hair Scrunchie” was born. By transforming the traditional daenggi into a modern scrunchie, I hoped to let the graceful beauty of the past continue to live on in contemporary fashion.
What did you focus on most during the design process?
The key focus was achieving “a balance between tradition and sophistication.” Rather than simply recreating traditional forms in a retro style, I aimed to harmonize them with contemporary fashion sensibilities. While maintaining the original structure of traditional knots, I introduced pastel shades and modern neutral colors so that younger generations could use the product comfortably. I also sought to express the “beauty of lines” by designing the tassel’s length and texture to flow gracefully with every movement.
What elements of traditional culture or palaces inspired you?
Walking through Gyeongbokgung and Changgyeonggung Palaces, I was deeply inspired by the graceful curves of the eaves, the rhythmic patterns of lattice doors, and the harmony of obangsaek blending with the palace walls. The architectural beauty of the Joseon Dynasty is more than decoration; it embodies order, dignity, and the aesthetics of restraint. I reflected that sense of balance in the rounded form of the scrunchie and the flowing movement of the tassel. The symbolic meanings found in the knots of hanbok accessories—connection, relationship, and harmony—were reinterpreted in a modern way to create an object that conveys Korean elegance even amid the pace of everyday life.
What do you think makes it especially appealing to international tourists?
Korean tradition is special not only for its visual beauty but also because it embodies a culture of courtesy and heartfelt sincerity. Even a single hair scrunchie reflects neatness, grace, and harmonious balance of natural colors. Many international visitor seem to perceive this as a kind of “subtle elegance.” The “Traditional Knot Tassel Hair Scrunchie” is regarded not merely as an ornament but as a symbolic fashion item that conveys both the refined beauty of Korean women and the understated hues of Joseon palace culture.
What are your future directions and vision?
UNEEDIT will continue to create designs that embody the idea of “tradition becoming part of everyday life.” Starting with the “Traditional Knot Tassel Hair Scrunchie,” we plan to expand Korean tradition into daily fashion items such as obangsaek (the traditional five cardinal colors) bracelets, knot brooches, and patterned scarves. We also aim to release annual design collections inspired by traditional aesthetics such as palaces, hanbok, and dancheong (Korean decorative coloring on wooden buildings and artifacts), ensuring that traditional culture remains alive and relevant to modern sensibilities rather than a relic of the past.
